I was in a hotel bar in the Canaries. My wife and stepdaughter were with me watching a cheesy production of Moulin Rouge by the local troupe. I was getting my Spanish measure of Southern Comfort while the others had gone on with theirs.
Somehow I didn’t hear the crash behind me, but Jan was in a heap on the ground.
They’d saved the bottle of wine and the glasses. But Jan’s knee was shot and we had almost to carry her back to the room.
Thanks to the EHIC, we ended up in Spanish A&E the next day, and that was the beginning of a long process that ended up in her having a knee replacement a couple of weeks ago. She can finally start recovery and get back to a job she loves after Christmas.
She’d already had one knee replaced three years ago, and it wasn’t a particularly great experience. However, as far as major surgery can be, the process was perfect.
She had the operation on at a treatment centre that does nothing but bones, knees, hips, noses and the like. It was small and calm, the staff didn’t look rushed off their feet, and they always had time for a chat.
But above all, there was no Accident & Emergency.
It’s a specialist centre where there are no distractions to suck away resources from what they do best.
